Description: This full-day workshop is designed for people who have little experience in digital photography but are looking to understand their cameras and the principles of photography to make incredible photos for years to come.

Meeting at 8am over coffee, we will make quick introductions and then get into specific topics, discussions and breakout sessions covering:

The Camera and Its Functions: In this portion of the workshop I will be discussing the camera and, specifically, how to use a DSLR and understanding exposure. What is an f-stop? What is ISO? How do I change my shutter speed? All of these questions and more will be answered. This is where you will learn the basic functions of your camera and test your skills with a series of (fun) tests.

The Art of Photography: This part of the workshop will focus on lenses, light, composition, depth of field and “thinking visually”. Through various breakout sessions, students will be encouraged think creatively using the technical info they’ve already learned.

Assignment/Critique: In the final part of this workshop, students will be given an assignment and have the chance to show what they’ve learned throughout day.

Other: This workshop will involve group and individual instruction, along with some breakout sessions and team interaction. My main objective is that you have a good grasp of the concepts of photography and a working knowledge of your camera so that you can produce your own great photos.

Workshop participation is limited to roughly 20 students on a first-come, first-serve basis. The fee must be paid in full at the time of reserving your spot (at this time I can only accept cash, cheques or email transfer).

*Note: this workshop is NOT limited to people who own a DSLR. Even if you only have a point-and-shoot, the principles involved are good to know whether you use a Nikon D3 or a disposable camera.  I encourage anyone who’s interested in photography to come out.
