John B. Zoe

John B. Zoe, photographed in Behchoko, NWT

Most people in the NWT – perhaps the North – will recognize John B. Zoe. He is one of the many strong voices for the Tlicho Nation, acting as a negotiator, consultant, and leader. He is a proud Dene man looking to bridge an understanding of the policies, politics, and way of life between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people.

I went to Behchoko along with Up Here Business editor, Mike Ganley, and our photo intern, Laura Fetherstonhaugh, to photograph Mr. Zoe. We wanted a strong photo to run with the interview. Normally when I walk into a shoot, I’ll look for a good location or background to sit the person for a portrait in their surroundings. But sometimes you walk into an office building and that idea goes out the window (bad fluorescent lights, bare walls, Ikea desks, fake plants, etc). This was the case yesterday, and so, turn off the fluorescents, bring in a studio light and shoot tight. I think these images work, under the circumstances. Thanks goes out to Laura for carrying my gear, setting things up and braving the chilly minus-40 road trip. And Mike, you still owe me $10 for gas.
