Walt Humphries

15 Mar

Walt Humphries, photographed at his Yellowknife home.

Walt Humphries is Yellowknife personified: a gritty prospector with a heart of gold. I photographed Walt for the magazine but also asked if I could use one of the images for Project Yellowknifer, my ongoing collection of portraits of Yellowknife residents. Walt, being the gracious guy that he is, welcomed me into his house, told me stories of prospecting and generally digging around for cool treasures at the dump and in and around the NWT landscape.

He’s a very interesting man – wish I had more time to chat with him. I’ll be using one of these images for Project Yellowknifer, but still not sure which one. I’m leaning toward the one posted above. I like the natural light and natural look of it. Then again, I’m also a fan of the deadpan editorial looks like the one shot against the plain background here. What do you think?

Walt’s ” southern sister’ here Pat. You have definitely captured the essence of the man in the top photo. Beautiful lighting and expression. It shows the gentleness that lurks within. Looking forward to seeing the article. Thanks for sharing.

The top photo captures him the best. The lighting & his expression are perfect!
Love the hat! He is a true character…. Anxious to see the article.

Photo #2 is my vote for best shot in this series because it has an angelic glow which highlights Walt’s face. The contrast with the hat is also striking. With photoshop a halo can be added but it really isn’t necessary. At least for those of us who know Walt!

Nice shots! If I had to choose a favourite, I’d go with the first one.

    Looking good, Walt.

My favourite is the last shot (kettle seen in photo behind R shoulder). His sense of humour comes through – not so much in the other photos.
