Slave River Paddlefest

2 Aug

Words to live by.

I have a buddy, Julian Morse, who’s head of the paddling club here in Yellowknife. For a couple years now, he’s been ranting and raving about paddlefest: a whitewater kayak and canoe festival party that happens on the legendary Slave River rapids near Fort Smith, a town on the NWT-Alberta border. Julian urged me to check it out this year, and so, I did – and I’m glad I did. If you get the chance to visit the rapids, please do. They are some of the most impressive rapids in the world and a playground for kayaking. The landscape and wildlife is pretty unique – it’s a place of wood bison, pelicans, falcons and snakes. All this in Canada’s far north.

Paddlefest itself was a blast and such a mix of skill level and people. Professional kayakers bob alongside total rookies, and everyone supports and encourages each other which makes for a fun and safe event. And when the paddlin’s done, beer funnels around a campfire are always in order. Pass the Advil.

Anyway, here’s a shout-out to Kirsten, Don, the Frenchies, John & Jen, JVC, Julian, Lee, Camilla, Ben, Paul & Becky, the guys who brought the firewood, Leif, the Samba Ke and Fort Smith paddling clubs, and everyone else. Oh, and of course O.J. and Castinka (Kosztinka). Thanks for a great weekend!

No shout out for Ben? I guess I’ll have to try harder next year. Glad you enjoyed it Pat!

I’m in complete shock. RIP, Kosztinka. What a complete and utter tragedy.
