The Back Bay Scratchers

The music scene in Yellowknife is pretty diverse and on any given night you can find everything from country, jazz, punk and rock bands (sometimes all at the same place). Old Town, in particular, turns out a lot of great local folk bands that hark back to the pioneering days when Yellowknife was a camp settlement for gold miners looking for paydirt. The Back Bay Scratchers are one of these groups. On their website, they say “like so many Northern bands, The Back Bay Scratchers were born one cold night in a shack down in the Woodyard of Old Town…”  and their mix of old time, swing, country and bluegrass sounds distinctly Woodyardian indeed. Thanks to Ben, Claire, Miranda and Ryan for inviting me to get some photos for them. If you get the chance make sure to see them live, dance a little jig, and raise a cold pint to these guys!
